OVERVIEW :
In order to make arrangements for the development of Ayurveda and Unani Tibbi systems of medicine and to regulate their business, a committee was formed in 1925 under the chairmanship of Late Justice Gokaran Nath Mishra, on whose recommendation the Indian Medical Board was established in 1926. The task of presenting measures and means for the development of medical systems, registration of Vaidyas / Hakims, control in relation to the study and practice of Indian medical systems was assigned. The first chairman of this board was Pandit Gokaran Nath Mishra, Chief Justice (Awadh) and in 1929 the chairman of this board was Justice Sir Syed Wazir Hasan, who remained on this post till 1946.
U.P. Indian Medicine Act 1939 was implemented from 1st October 1946, on the basis of this act the first board elections were held and on 1st March 1947 the first board was constituted. The chairman of this board, Mr. RB Dhulekar was nominated by the government. After the second election in 1950, Shri Kamla Pati Tripathi became the President of the Parishad. On the resignation of Mr. Tripathi, Mr. Darbari Lal Sharma was nominated as the President of the Council, who continued to work on this post for 18 years. Significant changes took place in the council during this period.
Faculty was established in 1956, its work was determined to arrange education/examination according to prescribed syllabus in affiliated educational institutions. After the death of Shri Sharma in March 1969, Dr. Vishwanath Dwivedi was nominated as the President of the Council. After the election of the council in 1969, a new council was formed, whose chairman Mr. Jagdishwar Dayal Agnihotri, MLA was nominated. In the year 1975, by amending the U.P. Indian Medicine Act 1939, the degree course was transferred to the University and the board was given the right to conduct paramedical course. Due to certain reasons, the board was not duly constituted from the year 1972 to the year 2010. Board elections were held in the year 2011 and the board was duly constituted.
Eligibility : Intermediate in any stream from a recognized board of education.
